Job Hunting - Day 1

"Good morning, VIETNAM!!!" - such a classic movie.

Seriously, happy Friday to all of you!

As the title says, today's the first (serious) day of my job hunting. I've tried to job hunt before, but I've been quite lazy and uninterested in said job hunting. With my recent graduation and a grandiose $50k of debt (thank you, high quality college education) hanging over my head, I can't afford to spend any more time lounging about.

The truth of the matter is, I don't know what I'm doing! Although, that can be said of any recent college graduate, I'm the first in my family to have made it this far. I'm the first with a formal education in my family (whether I'm truly educated or not, that can be debated), and I'm the first to be seeking a career, not a job. It's a bizarre feeling that I'm the first in the family to make a positive impact in my family.

So today, I set up a LinkdIn account, to portray my more professional side(???, I don't know what to say), as well as erasing (well, to the extent of my power) any dubious "events" on my social media (I really don't have any...I think, but I can never be too safe, I suppose). Oh, and I've got a résumé down. And that's all I got.

Not. Very. Productive.

The problem lies with me - "What do I to be? Who do I want to be?" I've been so used to being the busboy, the landscaper, the cashier, or the manufacturer that I don't know what else I could be! I can't see myself being in the upper echelons of the workforce here in the US. I'm too accustomed to being a blue-collar worker that becoming a white-collar worker seems an impossible goal to achieve.

I must reflect on what I want for myself career-wise and go from there. In the mean time, I'll be looking for postings online and nearby and hope to the Good Lord Upstairs that I can find something that I want and can do and can be immensely satisfying. It's such a shame to end today's post on a bummer note, but on the positive side, this also is a good exercise in whittling out what I don't want to do for my career, which is nice. I'll update you guys this upcoming Monday. Until then, fellow readers!

P.S.: I've gotta find a new name for you guys - "Readers" is too generic for my taste. You guys need a cool name or something.

"Hell Naw, B*tch, You Got a D*ick in Your Mouth!"

That's really one of the cool aspects of music: an artist can incorporate samples taken from movies (and such) and either incorporate them as part of the song (like Nine Inch Nails does in "The Becoming") or use that sample an element or introduction to a song. Additionally, it's through these songs that I've found some equally interesting and/or boring films that I've seen. Finally, seeing what samples are used kind of give you some idea as to what an artist finds interesting. It's like getting to know them as a person, rather than as a musician.

Here are some songs and the samples used that I've found along the way:

Nine Inch Nails, "The Becoming" (the screaming heard throughout the song, on a loop)
The looped scream comes from a scene in Robot Jox

(The sampled screams come in at about 20 sec. into the clip)

Rob Zombie, "Hands of Death(Burn Baby Burn)
The shouts of "Hail Satan!" and "God is Dead!" come from the final scenes of Rosemary's Baby
(Crappy Lyrics Video, but listen for the clip from 2:40-2:50)

(Listen to the first few seconds of this clip and from 0:55-0:59 for "God is Dead!")

Rise Against, "Survivor Guilt"
The discussion of America's future come from Catch-22 (as hi-lighted in the lyrics video)

(The first clip is from 1:07-1:25; the second, about 3:20-3:25)

Dr. Dre, "Deez Nuts"
The second intro (after the phone call, starting at :35 seconds) comes from a bit called "Chestnuts" from Rudy Ray Moore.

(The original bit begins at 1:45)

Well, that's all I've got for now. I've know of some others, but if I included them all, it'd be an incredible long and tedious post. All in all, it's really interesting to see how artists really incorporate existing material (whether it's from a film, television, or even a stand up comedy bit) into their music and make something that can be either frightening or humorous. Until the next post, my fellow readers!

"Yesterday, I Woke Up Sucking a Lemon..."

Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place" was their first song I really listened to. I knew about "Creep" because of Rock Band, and I knew of "High and Dry" because of 50/50, but it wasn't until Vanilla Sky that the band caught my ears. The sound is so eclectic and the album, Kid A, as a whole is bizarre, but attractive. That song is what put them on my radar. Eventually, I confessed to my friend that I wanted to really dig into Radiohead's discography. His response? "That's some deep waters there, man." No doubt.

I decided to begin with Pablo Honey and The Bends, their first two albums and from there, OK Computer, Kid A, and onwards. Some researched yielded that it was with Kid A that Radiohead became to be more artistic and eclectically esoteric with their music. So far though, I'm enjoying their crunchy Alt. Rock vibe and already have found some go-to songs ("Blow Out", "Anyone Can Play Guitar, "Planet Telex", "Just") from both albums. I can't wait to hear their shift from Alt. Rock to Art Rock in Kid A.

Like most of the other bands I listen to, Radiohead's been around for a cool minute, and I've just begun to really digest their music. And I'm fine with that: this is how I come about learning and discovering things at my pace. In some way, it lets me enjoy their on the premise that I want to, rather than giving them attention because they're "what's in" at the moment. I like it that way: I may be late to the party, but I make the most of it nonetheless.

Wish I Was Here...Already Married

"What do you mean you want to be married already?! You're young! Live life, make the most of your youth, and don't worry about girls until your older...much older! I kid on that, but seriously, why worry about marriage now? It'll come in time. You just have to be patient."

Almost ubiquitously, I get such reactions whenever I mention that I would have liked to be married already. When I was 14, I had hoped that I would have finished university, began my career, and have wedded a lovely, intelligent woman. All by the age of 22. Instead, I'm now 25, still fighting for my undergraduate degree, and single. Not even a girlfriend. We're talking "forever alone" type of situation. Actually, that's not entirely true. If pretty girls didn't make me so damn nervous...!
...

Actually, we're derailing here. You're probably thinking, Why do you want to be married already? What's the rush?, and if you weren't thinking it, you are now. To answer the question (that I imposed upon you - sorrynotsorry about that), the answer is quite simple: security. See, I'm not the kind of guy that just relentlessly pursuits women; I'm not the kind of guy that's constantly seeking for the next girl to smash (euphemism); and I'm not the kind of guy that constantly has some ulterior sexual motive for interacting with people of the opposite sex and gender (I was that person, but I've come along a way since then, but I digress). Perhaps, and embarrassingly so, I have no game (also euphemism) nor have I an interest in playing "the dating game." It's through marriage that I bypass this cruel and, at times, illogical farce of social interaction that juxtaposes bizarre human personalities with other bizarre human personalities.

The notion that I'd have some special lady to go home to, to give and receive any and all comforts has always been appealing to me. No games, doubts, worries, or other pointless bull. Just an ethereal security of knowing who's waiting for me (and who I'm waiting for) at end of the day. This is why I want to be married and avoid having to spend precious years carrying unnecessary emotional baggage and wear painful battle scars as we desperately search for our other halves like chickens with heads cut off.

In all honesty, I don't know why I'm feeling pressured to be married already. Is it just me playing some distorted mind game with my own self? All I know, at this point, is that I'm feeling all too self-aware of this. Is this just me being emotional or is it something more inherent within me that I'm not attending to?

P.S.: On an unrelated note, Zach Braff recently released Wish I Was Here and it looks interesting, similar to Garden State over a decade ago. If anything, this film just may be Garden State 2.0.

Maybe.

My Social Experiment: Day 0 (Nervous)

Before I begin what I set off to do, I feel like I should type down my thoughts as to how I feel. First off, I'm nervous. I have approximately 230 friends listed on Facebook: 50% that were added randomly these past few months, about 30% that I know by association, 15% that I don't even communicate with anymore, and the remaining 5% are people that I do communicate with. Only the 5% will be excluded (since there is no point in reconnecting with them when I already do communicate with them). SO...yeah, many will be complete and total strangers. Second, I'm pretty there are a several that are either married, or at least in a very serious relationship, so I can anticipate a lack of response (but hopefully a polite decline?) from these people.

So yes, I can say that I'm nervous: who will respond? Who will actually want to participate? Can I maintain communication with approximately 150 people (that's the amount of people I'm hoping to interact with)? Can I even initiate some sort of dialogue to begin with (after I post the initial question)?

I hope to seek some answers soon.

New Haircut!...Kinda...

This is me, with a size 2 head shave. Now, 3 and a half weeks later, my hair feels like a size 4 head shave. It's grown quite a bit, but I don't feel like taking time aside to head off to refresh my head with another buzz cut.

Incidentally, when I got this new 'do, I had just finished watching the final episodes of Breaking Bad and I may have been inspired to do so, after Pinkman went on a multi-day partying spree. Anyhow, I'll never tell, but many a friend and family do indeed suspect Breaking Bad to be my ulterior motive for the drastic change in hairstyle.

Honestly, I was bored and I wanted a small change that would have a big (positive) influence on how I perceive myself. It worked, sort of, since I still feel gawky and awkward whenever wear short-sleeved clothing and the twigs I call arms protrude so generously. When I got the haircut, my barber Sergio said that he wouldn't be held responsible for any crocodile tears for my decision. No offense, but as if. This is my decision, and I have no qualms about the choice to shave off my mop.

What remains to be seen is what hair style (if any at all) will be used once the hair of my head grows long again.

Connecting With Others

I've been glancing at my so-called "Facebook Friends List" and think to myself, What do I really know about these people? How can I begin to know them personally? The answers to these questions still elude me, but I'll come up with a solution of sorts. My gears of my mind are currently at work, devising a plan to effectively come up with an answer to sorts. If this all plays out, this might be the social experiment of my life!...thus far. I'm sure I'll be devising grander social experiments in the future of my life.

"GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!"

Lately, I've been feeling down. It's hard for me to admit this, since I'm making the conscious decision to post this entry for all to see, for all to have a little glimpse at one of my many flaws. Especially when the Internet is known for posting content that puts us nice and high and far apart from the rest. Still, I promised myself to be honest, especially to my "self", as I am now. "To thine own self be true..." as Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet

Anyhow, for the sake of truth and honesty, I'm sad to say that I've been sad lately. I know that's ok: people always have that "down time" in the rhythm of Life and I'm not an exception. However, the problem lies in the fact that I perpetuate this sadness, allowing it to bleed on and on for days, weeks, sometimes months, and unfortunately (regretfully so) years. What bothers me most is that I can't seem to let go and move on and that's where I'm at at the moment...again. I'm at the cusp of being overwhelmed with negativity that's unnecessary in my life...yet I invite it again, insisting for it to stay, give it food and drink, and ask for it to stay for as long as possible before this sadness must (temporarily) depart from my life. I bring it upon myself and it's such a drag...

I want to get out of it, but I just don't know how. I always think if I could cry it all out, I'd be able to relinquish much of what I'm already holding on to, but I know that's only a temporary solution. I know it'll come back, sooner rather than later. I've been taking action and doing things that are helping me feel good about myself, about life. I've been exercising and eating healthier as a means to begin developing a healthier self-image of myself; I'm still blogging here (obviously) as a means of reflection of what I'm going through, what I'm experiencing, and what I'm learning from my experiences; and I've been reading, writing here, listening to a lot of music, and other things to keep my mind engaged (distracted, really) from the negativity that dares creep into my life. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. These are really baby steps to a better perspective of life, but I'm hoping these initiatives will cascade into some torrential happiness that can help erode much of what I'm already harboring.

"We ARE the Walking Dead!"

Now that the Spring Semester is over (finally!) and summer is here, I've been making some headway here and there to read the now-famous The Walking Dead comic series. Like most people (I think), I first stumbled upon the series through the television show, not the comic series itself (and even then, I started watching the show well into the program's third season, so as you can see, I am quite behind). As of now, I have watched the show up until the end of the third season (I'm waiting on Netflix for the fourth), and I'm currently reading the seventh "chapter" in the comic series (through the "The Walking Dead Compendium" rather than the individual issues or the volumes themselves).

Of course, whenever a book is transposed into a television show or a film of sorts, there will always be liberties taken and changes made, and The Walking Dead is no exception to this rule. While some of the key settings (the initial camp, the Greene Farm, and so forth) stayed the same, it is the characters (some are exclusive to the show) and the events that really make up for the majority of the differences, differences that make the television show and the comic series become their own dynamic entities, rather than having the show simply replicate the source material in a bland and boring way. These differences, in some nerdy way, excite me, since I like to compare and contrast one rendition with the source material or one rendition with another rendition.

Rather than going in-depth with these differences, or even going into the plot, I just want to simply share this 2-page image that's found in the comic, powerfully stating that maybe it's not outside threat that should worry us, but perhaps it is "us" that should worry us.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

"My name is Benjamin Button and I was born in unusual circumstances..."

I had the fortunate pleasure of watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button a few days ago. For me, this was one of those movies where it just snuck past me. I knew about its existence since its theatrical release, but I never was compelled to watch the movie until recently.  In short, I loved it. While it was essentially Forrest Gump in reverse, Benjamin Button is one of those rare gems in film where you're not only watching it, you're immersed in it. However, it's just not the story alone that draws you in. It's the people, the places, and even the circumstance that do so. For as long as time moves forward, many people will age, circumstances will give and take life, and life itself is never still.

In some ways, taking the time to watch films that are more artistic, story-driven, and at times emotional seems to reflect the growth I'm going through as a person. For those who've known me over the years, these types of movies were not always my "cup of tea," so to speak. Maybe it has to do with all the reading I've been immersing myself with lately, as well as my binging on so much music that is sometimes unexpected, even for myself. Now, more and more of these types of films are giving me a satisfaction that, if my younger self would encounter the same film, he would dismiss them altogether. I want to continue going on this path and see where it takes me and just how much I'll change in the days, months, and years ahead of me.

Lending A Helping Hand

In recent days, the opportunity to give money to friends and family to help them reach their financial goals has presented itself in my life. The truth is, I haven't taken any action to donate money to their cause and I feel bad about it. Which this guilt is valid since the opportunity to help them can be done online! Rather than donating just the one time and be done with it (as I will do), I decided that I'd surprise them and help them out by putting links here for you read. The hope is that you too will be inclined to spread some goodwill to those that you're not familiar with, and this goodwill is something that is critically lacking in my personal life. I can often be lost in my own little world, and fail to pay attention to both the big things that are going on in the world on both a macro level (the crises between the Ukraine, Russia and the United States) and on a micro level (the needs of the homeless, family, the community). I personally hope that these small steps can lead me to give much more than just money to those less fortunate than me. Until next time, fellow readers!

Come Learn French with Me? (Part Un - Letters and Numbers)

Ah, man, it's been too long! I actually wanted to work on this two weeks ago, but life got in the way, as always (the sickness, work, and a barrage of reading assignments - told ya the demands of life, work, and school would get to me!). Anyhow, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I hope to use this cyberspace to review and share the progress that I'm making as I'm learning French! As I said, I;m a bit late for this (Rachel once told me that I'm constantly late to everything...she might have a point there.), but that won't discourage me at all *insert a heroically egotistical laughter here* MOVING ON! Here is a brief summary of what I have learned thus far =)

My Chain of Memories

Thanks to being sick these two weeks, I've been using my free time being bed-ridden to catch up on my gaming, especially considering I'm at the mercy of of my demands and expectations to both work and school. As the title of this blog post suggests, I've been frantically playing Kingdom Hearts: Re:Chain of Memories, trying to complete the game before all my free time is all used up. That and trying to squeeze in all  the Kingdom Hearts games (yes, even Re:Coded) before the highly-anticipated Kingdom Hearts III is finally released (and I mean finally!).

While Chain of Memories is an interquel, bridging Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II together, CoM also explores key motifs and themes revolving around memories and how those memories "chain" people together, establishing relationships not so easily broken, or separate two people indefinitely. By the end of the game, Sora had, essentially, lost all of his memories of the people he met, the places he visited, and adventures he shared with Donald, Goofy, and the myriad companions met along the way. The only memories retained at the top of Castle Oblivion were the critical memories that had motivated Sora to protect The One Most Dearest To Him, as well as not to forget the bond of friendship that tie Sora, Donald, and Goofy together.

In this context of the game, I often found myself reflecting about the people I know, the people I'm connected to, and the people most important to me. I know that I have people that are just like Goofy and Donald: they won't forget me, no matter how much time and distance separate us. I think of these people constantly, and I'm confident that they think of me, too. These people, I'm not too worried about, because we've been through too much to forget it all, even if now, the tiny details of our time together are either warped or marred indefinitely.

It's the people that I've met over the course of my life that this really strikes hard in my heart. I've made friends, shared moments, and had an adventure or two with the people I've met throughout my life. However, I constantly wonder: Do they remember me? Us? I still do, but...do they? I guess this all can be reduced down to the surprising revelation of the number of people that are deeply connected to Sora, and this revelation made me question the number of people that are connected to me, also. I know there are people, as mentioned earlier, that, without a shadow of a doubt, I am connected to; but on the other side of the coin, I also know that there are others where the connection may or may not exist at all. This makes me feel uneasy about myself sometimes.

Perhaps, this is just the rambling of  a self-conscious of Little Big Man who worries he may not have too many friends in his life. Who knows really? This could be a personal reminder to seek out those who matter to him most to reconnect, share, and live life together.

"her"

I recently saw this movie a almost a ago, totally unaware that this movie was released a few weeks back. In short, I was amazed by how great this movie was. Not that I had low expectations for the film, mind you, but when the story revolves around a romantic relationship between a man and an artificial intelligence, you just don't know what to expect! But Spike Jonze delivered a touching story that goes beyond the immediate, or the forever now as I call it (I'll always thank the Psychedelic Furs for that phrase).

In some ways, I feel that there's some foreshadowing about the direction of where our modern society is heading. For example, while the idea of dating an artificial intelligence seem ludicrous and preposterous now, perhaps it'll be a social/cultural norm in the not-to-distant future, when AIs can be intuitive and responsive as Samantha. After all, more and more relationships seem to created through the Internet or a social media website of sorts, so the idea of humans developing real emotions with AIs almost seems to be the next step. Also, it's a little depressing to say that we may end up being so overworked that people like Theodore (the main character in the film) are hired to wrie a myriad of romantic love letters on behalf of those who don't have the time anymore to even begin to write a love letter for somebody.

In some ways, I was able to connect with Theodore in not only the predicaments he was finding himself in, but even how he decided to deal with said predicaments. It was almost like looking at a mirror, and in doing so, realizing how my actions and decisions may have pushed her away. It was difficult to watch those moments, to know that I've made those same mistakes Theodore had also made. But on a more positive perspective, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing those surrogate love letters he had composed, mostly because those letters remind me of the letters I've written over a year ago. Perhaps, I should keep on writing letters, even if there isn't a narrative to bring them all together, like the first twelve I wrote did.

All in all, this is one of those movies that you'll walk away moved, reflecting on what is love, how it's expressed, and how just the right person (or in this case, an AI) can make life all the more beautiful, inspiring, and fulfilling.

"One Sky, One Destiny"

"Thinking of you, wherever you are...There are many worlds, but they share the same sky - one sky, one destiny."

As I've posted something earlier this year, I have signed up for an Instagram account. For the most part, I've been quite lax with my activity, having developed a modest following and such, but I suppose I could put more effort into it. However, that's not the point. The point is that I try to interact with others and I feel that there are several people that I've taken a liking to, mostly because we are able to practically have exchange conversations through the comment sections. As I have more conversations and learn more about the other people that I follow, it always takes me by surprise that some of the people that I interact with are from different parts of the world. Scotland, the Philippines, Canada...the countries go on! Of course, I shouldn't be so surprised that this is the case - this is the modern age of the Internet, after all. So why does it take me by surprise that it does?

Perhaps it has to do that there is a personal connection (albeit a small, distant connection), since users that I follow and converse with regularly become more than just a clever user name and a series of random photographs. They become nurses, gamers, photographers, dog lovers, celebrators of life, and so much more! I guess this can be compared to the random strangers in our daily lives. Maybe that's why I'm always taken aback when I learn more about the people I follow or who follow me. They become a person, with hopes, fears, hopes, and despairs, (although the Internet always shows the best of us, never the worst of us). I can add a face, a personality, and perhaps if I'm ever lucky enough, a voice to those so far away from where I'm from.

But it isn't just technology that connects us, as the quote reveals. There are some many things we share together. The sun, the moon, the stars, the skies, the world, the human condition. Only we forget to that we do, since it seems that we're always drowning in a sea of our own problems to remember that our lives are much more than the forever now. I know I'm at fault at this from time to time. Which is why I'm writing this now - I had to be reminded of those connections. The hope is that I (or rather, we) don't forget this simple truth and the we continually reach out and impact the lives of those around us, both near and far away.

Been A While...

...Since I last posted here. School, work and "Rachel" (the other girl I started seeing) have been my focuses in life lately, and at times, I simply want to shut down for the purpose of reflecting my life in recent weeks. So, in reflection (but mostly because there are things I said I would talk about), here are the topics of discussion for the following blog posts:

  • My first experiences as a drunk
  • Ophelia (my Teggy) being kidnapped
  • Why listening to Coldplay doesn't make you gay
  • Finally, "Rachel" and how I found her

So, there you have it. Four tales of my convoluted life story (albeit a good one).

P.S. Does anybody read these? Or am I this digital madman, crying futilely to the perceived skies above me? I know you at least visit (the stats don't lie, so ha!), so say hello and leave a comment (just don't say I'm gay for listening to Coldplay)! Until next time!

In Two Weeks' Time...

...School begins anew for me. I am pretty excited and nervous. I will be taking on 16 units' worth of class materials, all the while juggling work, some social life, and sleep (if any). It's just not this upcoming Fall semester that will be like this. If anything, my remaining semesters will be like this, pushing myself to the limit in hopes of accomplishing and meeting all the requirements for my undergraduate degree.

So, while school is not in session, I'll be trudging along with work and life, before the black hole that is my academic life sucks me in and drags me down to oblivion. I'm feeling quite happy now, but I don't think I'll so optimistic at the end of December. But, to end on a happy note, I now know how to handle and reduce the murkiness of the upcoming semester =D

Life

Life, by The Cardigans, is a great album, actually. I prefer the Minty Fresh Records re-release (the US edition) over the original European LP, but that's just my preference.

Anyhow, I figured I should post a new entry, seeing that I haven't done so in a good while. I was thinking of putting myself on the spot and assess myself earnestly and introspectively, if that can be done. My life, in short, still feels pretty incomplete, but I'm striving to accept that reality and learning to create new, refreshing goals that build happiness, knowledge, and life experiences to create a better, happier me. (How am I doing so far?)

I was in a bit of a bad spell recently, meaning that I wasn't really motivated to do things, create things, or even learn (which is why I have been absent digitally lately)! Even now, I still have that "It's too much work!" mentality, but there's nothing to do but to get up and move onward (even if my feet are dragging a bit...)! :-)

And now, without Much Ado (About Nothing, that is ;D), here is a quick summary of my life thus far:
